COVID-19 Control: New Tech Boosts Precision Prevention

Foreword

Recently, some European countries have reported an increase in COVID-19 infection rates. Since mid-June, the incidence rate in Spain has nearly doubled, while the pandemic in the Île-de-France region stabilized in early October.

At the same time, the positivity rates for rhinovirus and respiratory syncytial virus have shown an upward trend in some southern provinces of China. Although the overall respiratory infectious disease situation remains at a relatively low level, a gradual increase is being observed.

01 Global Situation: New Variants Drive Minor Fluctuations

In autumn 2025, the COVID-19 pandemic has shown a slight rebound in many parts of the world.

In Spain, data from the Carlos III Health Institute indicate that the national incidence rate has risen from 46.6 cases per 100,000 residents in mid-June to 99.3 cases in late September.

The newly emerged Stratus and Nimbus variants are considered the main drivers of this wave.

Immunologist Rafael Toledo pointed out that due to the absence of large-scale infection peaks recently, many people have seen a decline in immunity, making them more susceptible to the new variants.

In France, the so-called “Frankenstein” XFG variant—a new variant formed by the fusion of two Omicron sub-variants—has been circulating in the Île-de-France region.

Val-de-Marne is the most affected area in the Île-de-France region, with 364.26 per 100,000 residents visiting emergency departments due to suspected COVID-19 infections.

However, experts from the Pasteur Institute have stated that while this variant is more contagious, it is not more dangerous than previous variants.

02 Domestic Situation: Co-circulation of Multiple Respiratory Pathogens

Monitoring data from the National Disease Control and Prevention Administration shows that the current situation of infectious diseases in China remains generally stable, with COVID-19 circulating at a relatively low level.

However, as the autumn and winter seasons approach, the activity of various pathogens such as influenza viruses, common coronaviruses, and respiratory syncytial viruses has gradually intensified, leading to alternating or co-circulation of multiple respiratory infectious diseases.

According to the latest surveillance results for Week 40 released by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the top three pathogens detected in respiratory samples from sentinel hospitals’ outpatient and emergency influenza-like illness cases were rhinovirus, respiratory syncytial virus, and enterovirus.

Notably, the positivity rate for respiratory syncytial virus has increased significantly in southern provinces, with the 0–4 age group showing higher rates than other age groups.

Researcher Jiang Jianmin from the Zhejiang Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention reminded the public to pay close attention to respiratory infectious diseases after the National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holidays.

03 Prevention and Control Strategies: Multiple Measures to Address Pandemic Risks

In response to the challenges of autumn and winter pandemic control, the National Disease Control and Prevention Administration issued a notice in late September titled “Notice on Strengthening the Prevention and Control of Key Infectious Diseases Such as COVID-19 Before, During, and After the 2025 National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival Holidays and During the Autumn and Winter Seasons”.

Pandemic control requires multiple measures:

Accelerate the establishment and operationalization of provincial-level coordinated regional infectious disease monitoring, early warning, and emergency command information platforms.

Fully deploy and apply the national intelligent infectious disease monitoring and early warning front-end software in secondary and higher medical institutions.

Promote clinical syndrome monitoring and multi-pathogen detection capabilities in sentinel hospitals for infectious diseases.

Vaccination remains a crucial preventive measure. Health departments in various countries are actively encouraging key populations, including the elderly, individuals with underlying health conditions, children, and healthcare workers, to voluntarily receive vaccines for influenza, COVID-19, and pneumococcal diseases.

In France, the COVID-19 and seasonal influenza vaccination campaign began in mainland France on October 14, 2025.

Daniel López Acuña, former Director of Health Action at the World Health Organization, emphasized, “Vaccination and wearing masks in high-risk settings (such as hospitals, nursing homes, and public transportation) remain the most effective ways to prevent the spread of the pandemic.”

04 Technological Innovation: Significant Improvement in Nucleic Acid Extraction Efficiency

Rapid and accurate virus detection is crucial in pandemic control efforts. As the “first step” in gene sequencing and detection, nucleic acid extraction directly impacts the efficiency and accuracy of subsequent analyses.

When dealing with complex samples, traditional RNA extraction methods often require switching to specialized kits for different sample types, resulting in cumbersome procedures and high costs, which has become a key bottleneck limiting detection efficiency.

Shanghai Leading Bio-Tech Co., Ltd. has addressed this industry challenge with its universal RNA extraction kit, achieving a “one-kit-fits-all” solution.

This product covers “difficult samples” from the plant kingdom as well as animal samples, breaking the classification limitations of traditional kits and improving experimental efficiency by 200%.

LNJNBio’s Viral DNA/RNA extraction kit utilizes self-developed nanoscale magnetic beads combined with optimized surface functional group modifications, achieving a nucleic acid recovery rate of over 95%.

05 Future Outlook: Emphasizing Precise Prevention and Technological Innovation

As the autumn and winter seasons progress, pandemic control continues to face challenges. The National Disease Control and Prevention Administration pointed out that increased population movement and gatherings during the National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holidays further elevate the risks of pandemic spread and the difficulty of control.

Kindergartens, schools, nursing homes, and social welfare institutions must implement daily protective measures and health monitoring.

In response to the global pandemic situation, the National Disease Control and Prevention Administration has called for strengthening the monitoring and information collection of global infectious disease outbreaks, dynamically tracking and analyzing the situation and characteristics of COVID-19, monkeypox, and other diseases, and ensuring timely early warning and response preparedness.

At the technological level, innovations in nucleic acid extraction technology provide strong support for pandemic control.

The universal RNA extraction kit developed by Shanghai Leading Bio-Tech not only improves detection efficiency but also simplifies the operation process, making it compatible with fully automated extraction workflows. Compared to traditional methods, it reduces the number of steps by 3–5, saving valuable time for large-scale screening efforts.

This technological breakthrough is driving the entire industry toward a new paradigm of “minimalist extraction.”

Advancements in nucleic acid testing technology directly impact the efficiency of pandemic control. The universal RNA extraction kit developed by Shanghai Leading Bio-Tech has increased nucleic acid extraction efficiency by 200%, breaking the classification limitations of traditional kits.

As multiple respiratory infectious diseases alternate or co-circulate during the autumn and winter seasons, such technological innovations in improving testing efficiency will provide stronger support for pandemic control efforts.
