It is not recommended to use expired bionano magnetic beads. Expired magnetic beads are prone to problems such as decreased magnetic responsiveness, ineffective surface functional groups, and agglomeration and precipitation. These problems can lead to low target binding efficiency, impure elution, slechte herhaalbaarheid, and even nonspecific binding that interferes with the results.

1.Direct Impact on Experimental Results

  • The surface functional groups of the magnetic beads become ineffective or fall off, significantly reducing the target binding efficiency, resulting in false negatives, low detection signals, and severely distorted results in quantitative experiments.
  • The magnetic beads agglomerate and have poor dispersibility, which easily leads to nonspecific binding, resulting in false positives and interfering with experimental judgment.
  • The magnetic responsiveness weakens. During magnetic separation, the adsorption is slow, there is a large amount of residue, the elution is impure, and the repeatability of the results is extremely poor, making it impossible to replicate.

2.Increased Experimental Operation Risks

  • Expired magnetic beads are prone to precipitation and caking. When pipetting, they can easily block the pipette tip or cause uneven liquid aspiration, leading to errors in the experimental system.
  • The preservation solution of some magnetic beads is prone to microbial growth and component deterioration after expiration, contaminating samples and experimental consumables and affecting all subsequent experiments.

3.Hidden Experimental Cost Losses

  • Using expired magnetic beads in experiments directly wastes samples, reagents, manpower, and time. Subsequent experiments need to be redone, increasing the overall cost.
  • If unqualified results are mistakenly taken as experimental conclusions, it will lead to deviations in the research direction and even generate incorrect experimental data.

4.Extra Risks in Special Scenarios

  • If used in scenarios such as clinical testing, sample traceability, and formal research projects, the incorrect results produced by expired magnetic beads may lead to clinical misdiagnosis, unreliable research conclusions, and even affect the validity of project data and publication.
  • If it is for an emergency temporary test, quality control verification should be carried out first: observe whether the magnetic beads are uniform without obvious precipitation, conduct a smallscale test with standard samples to verify whether the binding/elution efficiency and recovery rate meet the standards.
  • Only after meeting the standards can they be used temporarily. Expired magnetic beads are strictly prohibited from being used in formal experiments, quantitative experiments, and clinicalrelated experiments.
