Polystyrene Microspheres

Introduction

Polystyrene microspheres are are spherical colloidal particles and amorphous polymer.

Characteristics

They are synthesized through emulsion polymerization, dispersion polymerization, soap-free emulsion polymerization and other methods.

Applications

Polystyrene microspheres without surface functional groups can combine antigens and antibodies through physical adsorption and can be widely used in enhanced immunoturbidimetry (PET), latex agglutination tests and microsphere capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, etc. In addition, latex microspheres can also be used as templates, measurement standards, additives, etc.

FAQs

Q: Why modify the surface?
A: The native surface is inert. Modifying it (e.g., adding carboxyl -COOH or amino -NH₂ groups) allows for the attachment of biomolecules and enhances stability.

Q: How to choose the size?
A: Depends on the application: choose a precise known size for calibration; 1-10μm for flow cytometry; nanoscale (<100nm) for drug delivery.

Q: Where does the fluorescence come from?
A: They don't fluoresce on their own; fluorescence is achieved by embedding or bonding stable fluorescent dyes inside the microspheres.
